On April 12th, 2024 the world's biggest Musical Festival, Coachella will begin its 25th annual music festival.
To begin the hype around Coachella season, the star-studded line-up was announced in January. The headliners include Lana Del Rey, Tyler the Creator, and Doja Cat.
Announcing this line-up opened the doors to millions all across social media. Some were excited about this all-star lineup; however, not every review was positive.
The students of Dublin Scioto have shared their own opinions through an anonymous survey.
The survey was provided as an option for all Scioto students who wished to fill it out. It asked a variety of questions such as overall thoughts on the headliners and even each day's line-up.
Each of these factors was on a scale from 1-5 with 1 being labeled as “Overwhelmingly Negative” and 5 being labeled as “Overwhelmingly Positive.” There was also a section where students could share any other thoughts they had on the line-up.
Most students said their overall thoughts of the line-up as a “3 out of 5” – having no strong feelings.
However, they rated the headliners “4 out of 5,” which would be an overall positive rating.
For each day, the overall ratings were as follows:
Friday line-up: a perfect “5 out of 5”
Saturday line-up: a perfect “5 out of 5”
Sunday line-up: “2.5 out of 5”
Noticeably, the headliner for Sunday is Doja Cat who has not been received well from the general public.
Some students shared their reasons for their ratings both positive and negative.
One unnamed student had something to say about how the Coachella line-up was organized saying, “I'm not gonna lie they should put Tyler [the Creator], Ken Carson, Destroy Lonely, and Uzi on the same day.”
However, it might be better that they are spread out on different days. When somebody buys tickets to Coachella they are buying them for the whole 3-day weekend. This can cost, at minimum, $500 per person.
That $500 does not include their food, hotel, and gas, and possible plane tickets.
However, for that cost, one can attend 3 days of Coachella with many different people performing. If all of these artists with similar music and fan bases were performing on the same day some people would buy tickets just for that day which would be a disadvantage to people who would want to attend all 3 days of tickets.
Another comment by a student says, “We are seizing the opportunities for the other artists who are well qualified and have been performing at Coachella for years being kicked off the roster for artists who are getting publicity both good AND bad just for people to see the names as they're eye-catching.”
This is a very good argument as over recent years there has been a decrease in repeating artists and artists with interesting histories that can draw even more attention to Coachella and as it is said in the entertainment business “Any publicity is good publicity”. Coachella is no exception to this saying.
This could also be another chance for new artists to get exposure such as the band's late night drive home, Renee Rapp, The Last Dinner Party, and Sabrina Carpenter.
Despite these opinions from around the world, Coachella will still be happening beginning on April 12 in Los Angeles, California.
Due to a wide variety of musical tastes, there will always be a group out there criticizing the line-up. Perhaps next year’s line-up will satisfy the people unhappy with this year’s line-up.
